Expo promotes diabetes awareness month

A free Diabetes Awareness Expo will be held on Saturday, November 18, from 9 to 4 at Elegante Hotel in Albuquerque.

Ten healthcare speakers will cover all aspects of living with the disease, which affects more than 241,000 New Mexicans. Free eye screenings for children aged 3-16 will be provided by Lions Project KidSight.

Sponsored by the New Mexico Lions Diabetes Awareness Program, the Expo will also include free screenings for glucose, blood pressure, bone density and more, as well as a healthy cooking demonstration. Speakers are scheduled at half-hour intervals to educate the public about diabetes prevention, treatment and management. Added features include Native Sole foot washing and Zumba! related businesses and services will also be on display.

This EXPO is not just for diabetics. It is for pre-diabetics, and for parents, spouse, children and friends of those with diabetes or pre-diabetes. It is also for anyone who is concerned that they may be among the estimated 560,000 undiagnosed diabetics or pre-diabetics in New Mexico, especially those who would like to take steps to prevent development of the disease or slow its progression.
