The Manzano Monarchs (11-0) continued their quest for a state championship with last Friday’s 45-7 rout over ninth-seeded Clovis in the Class 6A state quarterfinals at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque. East Mountain resident Andrew Erickson helped the Monarchs’ effort by scoring two touchdowns—one rushing and one receiving. The Monarchs’ next challenge will be the fourth-seeded Las Cruces Bulldawgs (10-1) in the state semifinals on Friday at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.
Mountainair’s No. 2 football team (9-1) beat third-seeded Mesilla Valley 46-28 last Friday at home in the 8-Man state semifinals. The Mustangs play the No. 1 Melrose Buffaloes (10-0) in the state championship on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Moriarty’s football season ended last Friday in a 28-20 loss at fourth-ranked Ruidoso in the 4A state quarterfinals. The No. 5 Pintos finished with an 8-4 overall record.
