Marguerite Gayle May, 71, of Corona, peacefully passed away Oct. 8. She was born May 3, 1944, in Cedarvale, to the late Everet and Pauline (Smith) McCloud. Marguerite was a lifetime New Mexico resident and a member of the First Baptist Church of Corona. She also was a member of the fraternal order of the Pythian Sisters. Marguerite was also preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer May and brother, LeRoy McCloud. She is survived by her son, Matthew May of Alamagordo; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Bob Burroughs of Corona; sisters, Nora Ann O’Dell, Mildred Criddle, Bonnie Lackey and Shirley Dix; grandchildren, Dusty Burroughs and Cindy Carpentar, and great-granddaughter, Anna Rose Burroughs. A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Corona, with Cal West to officiate. Arrangements were entrusted to Harris-Hanlon Mortuary.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
