Alice M. Olson, 78, passed away Feb. 22 in Albuquerque. She was born in Esmond, North Dakota, on Sept. 16, 1937, to the late Conrad and Regarda Erck. Alice was a devout Christian and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Moriarty. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gilman Olson Sr.; brothers, Oscar Erck and Nick Erck; sisters, Rose Decker, Darlene Swank, and Edith Haberstrah, and daughter, Alice Mary Olson. Alice is survived by her son, Gilman J. Olson Jr. of Moriarty; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen Olson of Moriarty, Deborah and Bruce Stepan of Columbiana, Ohio, Paula and Brad Smith of Edgewood, and Reinette and Gary Sinacori of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers Donald Erck of Albuquerque, Raymond Erck of Los Lunas, Leo Erck of Sun City, Nev., and Edward Erck of Portland, Ore.; sisters Jane Burkhart of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Beatta Gasparre of Las Vegas, Nev. Alice was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. A rosary was recited Feb. 29, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, with a Celebration of Mass following, with Father Lancaster officiating. Interment was at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Everet Sinacori, Orion Sinacori, Sheldon McCloskey, Matthew Smith, Christopher Smith and Dale McCloskey. Honorary pallbearers were B.J. Stepan, Benjamin Stepan, Brian McCloskey, David McCloskey, Sean McCloskey, Steven Spann, Josh Rogers, Kent Leath and Troy Pagliocca.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
