Barbara Jane Forrest, 77, peacefully passed away Sept. 7. She was born on July 4, 1938, in Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick, Canada, to the late Fred and Phylis (Gilmore) Thornton. Her beautiful smile and kind heart will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Thornton. Barbara is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen G. Forrest of Edgewood, and Scott and Dana Forrest of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Bill Thornton; sisters, Annette Roix and Louise Trail; and five grandchildren, Stephen, Erica, Vanessa, Kimberly and Brooklyn. No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements were entrusted to Harris-Hanlon Mortuary.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
