Estancia’s Adam Lujan rushed for four touchdowns while Zeke Tapia and Isaiah Chavez each added a pair of TDs as the undefeated Bears routed the visiting No. 8 Texico Wolverines 54-0 last Friday in the Class 3A state quarterfinal.
“Our boys played well but we still made some mistakes that need correcting,” said Estancia head coach Stewart Burnett.
With the win Estancia advances to the semifinals against the fifth-seeded Lordsburg Mavericks Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Despite being the No. 1 seed the Bears must travel to Lordsburg this year because they hosted the Mavericks last year in the 3A semifinals.
Burnett admits the travel is a challenge but one his team is ready for. “It’s something I actually think can be used to our advantage,” he said. “We just need to focus and not get caught up in the distractions.”
