Biz Buzz: Pretty Peyote brings hand-made line to Edgewood

It started about 5 years ago because their daughter had eczema and needed soap without synthetic dyes and other ingredients—and expanded as friends and family wanted to purchase their hand-crafted products.

This week Pretty Peyote held a grand opening in Edgewood with a storefront, offering everything from deodorant to cosmetics to men’s grooming products.

John-Henry and Britnie Evans relocated their family to Edgewood “from big cities,” he said, and now have a homestead where they raise some of the products used in their line.

Deodorants are made “without aluminum, and don’t have the cancer-causing ingredients that can be found in many products, he said. Pretty Peyote also features a line of lotions, a men’s line including mustache wax and beard oils, along with bars of soap, bath bombs and other products: “pretty much the whole nine yards,” he said.

Demand for non-toxic cosmetic products is growing, Evans said. “Lots of people are starting to think differently about those products—you can see the huge markets that are coming around.”

Products feature “skin-loving essential oils” and natural fats like coconut oil.

The make-up line includes eye shadow, blushes and foundations. The men’s line runs the gamut from shaving soap to deodorant and a facial masks.

Lotions, body butters and lip balms, bath products, shampoos and conditioners—and of course bars of soap—round out Pretty Peyote’s offerings.

The couple moved from Denver to Albuquerque, then out to Cedar Grove. They have two children and are expecting a third. Britnie Evans does most of the soap-making, currently from their home. Future plans include moving production to the Edgewood store as well.

The storefront is on Historic Route 66 at 2 Marietta Court in Edgewood, next door to Computer Shack and The Frozen Yogurt Parlor. Evans built the shelves and display cabinets inside the store.

Pretty Peyote is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get in touch, call 505-281-2485 or visit prettypeyote.com.
