East Mountain’s girls basketball team lost last Friday at home 72-13 to district rival Portales.
The defeat was the Lady Timberwolves’ worst of the season and the most points they’ve surrendered since giving up 75 to Tularosa last year.
Portales was unstoppable right out of the gate with a 20-0 first-quarter run. “They’re the best team we’ve played all season,” East Mountain head coach Hobert “H” Warren said of the Lady Rams. “They’re probably the fifth-best team in the state, in all classes.”
Ryann Warren hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter to finally get East Mountain (12-7, 0-1 District 4-4A) on the board, ending a 9-minute scoreless drought. She led the Lady T’Wolves with 4 points.
But less than a minute later the Lady Rams responded with a 3 of their own on their way to a 21-3 run.
Portales led 41-6 at halftime.
East Mountain’s Kailey McCall sank a 3-pointer, her only shot of the game, midway through the third quarter; Lana Hoover made the home team’s only basket in the fourth.
Despite the lopsided loss, Warren said his squad is resilient and will bounce back. “These girls have grit, and when you’ve got grit you get back up,” Warren said.
East Mountain plays Bosque at home tonight.
