East Mountain Little League’s 2018 season wrapped up with two division tournament championship games June 9 at Vista Grande Community Complex in Sandia Park.
The Rangers beat the Astros 8-3 to take the Minors Division (9-11 year olds) championship, and the Reds toppled the Yankees 12-2 to claim the crown in the Rookies Division (6-8 year olds).
“The kids were absolutely phenomenal,” Rangers head coach Cinder Griego said. “It was all the kids, all their hard work.”
The fourth-seeded Rangers came out swinging and scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning.
The No. 1 seed Astros—who had lost only one game all season—responded with a run in the second inning.
The Rangers added 2 more runs in the third.
Following a couple of fielding miscues by the Astros, Sullivan Millea’s RBI double helped the Rangers extend their lead with 4 more runs in the fifth.
The Astros added a run in the fifth and another in the sixth.
“We had some errors that cost us some runs,” Astros head coach Jason Rector said. “But the Rangers played hard, they were the better team today.”
In the Rookies championship, the Reds—the only team in the division with one loss the entire season—scored 2 runs in the first inning and added 5 in the second.
The Yankees plated a run in the second inning and another in the third.
The Reds scored 5 more runs in the fourth inning to win on the 10-run mercy rule.
East Mountain Little League will feature one team in the New Mexico Little League District 5 All-Stars tournaments that get underway later this month.
The lone EMLL team will compete in the 8-10 year-old division and plays against Roadrunner Little League June 30 at 9 a.m. at Roadrunner’s complex in Albuquerque.
