Estancia, Mountainair athletes shine at 1A-3A state track and field championships

Estancia High’s Jaimey Fastnacht and Priscilla Padilla, and Mountainair High’s Alicia Kayser all took home state titles at last weekend’s Class 1A-3A state track and field championships in Albuquerque. Several other athletes from both schools had strong performances.

Distance-runner Fastnacht claimed the gold medal in the 3A girls 3,200-meter race, and got the silver medal in the 1,600m race—finishing less than a half-second behind the winner.

Padilla won the gold in the 3A long jump.

Both were also members of Estancia’s girls 1,600m sprint-medley team that finished fifth.

Mountainair’s Kayser won the gold medal in the 2A girls 400m dash. Kayser also carried the baton in the first leg of the girls 4x400m relay race to help her team take the silver, and the 4x200m relay to help the team take the bronze. She was also a member of the 1600m sprint-medley team that finished seventh.

Estancia

Brian Heredia won the bronze medal in the 3A boys 400m dash. Heredia finished just 7/100 of a second behind the second-place runner, and only 1/2 second behind the winner.

Scarlett Gonzales won the bronze in the 3A girls javelin. She also finished seventh in shot put, and eighth in discus.

Brian Walker finished in fourth place in three separate events: the 110m and the 300m hurdles, and the pole vault.

The boys 4x400m relay team won the bronze.

Kaitlyn Calhoon finished fifth, and Callie Larsen seventh, in the girls pole vault; Drayton Oberg, sixth in boys javelin.

Estancia’s girls team finished in eighth place overall, and the boys team finished eleventh.

Mountainair

Kasey Reese won the silver medal in the 2A boys 300m hurdles, and the bronze in the 110m hurdles; Chandler Roberts took fifth in the 110m and sixth in the 300m hurdles.

Reese and Roberts were also members of the 4x200m relay team that finished sixth.

Jason Padilla finished fourth in the pole vault; Aliyah Padilla finished fifth in the girls 1,600m run; Wyatt Greene finished sixth in the 3,200m; Jentry Kayser finished seventh in the triple jump, and eighth in the long jump; Jacob Teaney finished sixth in the 100m dash, and eighth in the long jump; Hannah Torres finished seventh in the 100m hurdles; the boys 4x400m relay came in seventh place.

Mountainair’s girls team finished seventh overall, and the boys team finished ninth.
