Patti Welch, a groomer and manager at Hound Haven in Edgewood, is offering free microchip scans to help recover pets who may have ran away during the 4th of July festivities.

She said she doesn’t charge because she is an animal lover herself and just wants to help people. “So many dogs get lost with the holiday and we also had the rainstorms,” Welch said.

She said she probably sees as many as 50 reports a day about missing animals. As a result of the need she perceives in the community, she always carries her scanner and never charges people. “We will call the chip company and get [pets] home without having to send them to a shelter,” she said. For anyone who has found a pet, contact Hound Haven at 505-286-3647 and leave a message.
