Joe B. Esquibel Sr., 93, passed away Nov. 18 in Albuquerque. He was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Tierra Maria, to the late Jose D. and Eufemia (Valdez) Esquibel. On Sept. 10, 1952 he married the love of his life, Sophie R. Garcia in Tierra Maria. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the First Assembly of God in Estancia. He was a longtime resident of New Mexico and was a devout Christian. He is also preceded in death by his sisters, Odlia, Lucy, Ida and Helen, and brothers, Rudy, Dorotao and Jose. He is survived by his wife, Sophie Esquibel of McIntosh; sons, Joe and Roseanne Esquibel Jr., Albert and Isabel Esquibel, Moses and Kathy Esquibel, and Ernest Esquibel (and good friend, Albert Chavez), all of Albuquerque; and Michael and Rosalind Esquibel of McIntosh; daughters, Carla and Louie Esquibel of Albuquerque, and Dodie and Tom Vasquez of Denver, Colo., and sister, Stella Galbadon of Calif.; 34 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Nov. 21 at the Moriarty Civic Center, with Pastor Michael Esquibel officiating.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
