Lady Pintos basketball produces ‘best effort’ in win over Del Norte

After defeating Ruidoso 35-29 in the Nov. 30 season opener and getting past Bernalillo 47-43 the next day, the Moriarty High School girls basketball team remained undefeated by downing the visiting Del Norte Lady Knights Dec. 4.

Kailei Edwards nailed three first-quarter 3-pointers on her way to scoring a team-high 16 points to help lift the Lady Pintos to a 49-33 victory over the Lady Knights for a 3-0 start on the season.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Edwards said after the game. “I think we came out more confident [than the first two games], definitely.”

Moriarty built a 10-point lead early in the second quarter and led Del Norte 22-11 by halftime.

“I was pleased,” Moriarty head coach Joe Bailey said. “It’s the best effort we’ve had.”

Brooke Burch’s three consecutive layups at the start of the third quarter ignited a 16-2 run that blew the game open. Hope Bennett capped the run with a steal in Del Norte’s backcourt that she took the length of the floor for a coast-to-coast layup to give Moriarty a 38-13 lead.

“That all came off our defense,” Bailey said of the third-quarter surge.

Burch had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“Brooke hasn’t even begun to touch what she can do,” Bailey said, adding, “We’d like to put a whole game together—we got a little sloppy at the end—but it’s by far our best effort so far.”

Bailey noted that Edwards has put in a lot of time developing her shooting, and added that Ashley Strader—the only returning starter from last season—is the “glue” of the team. Strader scored a team-high 14 points against Bernalillo.

“But we’ve got a long way to go,” Bailey pointed out.
