The Independent was first conceived by Wally Gordon and founded by him in 1999. Leaning on his long roots in the East Mountains, Wally brought The Independent through its first 10 years, selling the newspaper to his employees in 2010. In 2020, that buyout was complete. Since 2010, Leota Harriman has been the driving force of The Independent, which has become a true family business under her leadership. Three generations of the Harriman family now work at the newspaper.
We strive every day to provide an unbiased forum for the disparate voices of those living in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley. With a “hyperlocal” focus, The Independent brings the stories of the community back to itself. Our coverage is award-winning, and our walls hang with dozens of awards for journalism, design, sports, news coverage and more. Harriman’s years-long tenure on the NM Press Association, of which she is currently president, is a testament to her leadership in New Mexico’s newspaper landscape. The Independent is committed to journalism.
