Michele Lynne Fowner, 52, of Edgewood passed away July 22 in Albuquerque. A life celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 at Andy Fowner’s home at 49 Sandia Street in Moriarty. Michele was born in Manchester, Conn., to Patricia Ann Irish and Barry John McCormick on Feb. 5, 1963. She went to school at Los Alamos High School. She married her middle school sweetheart Andrew Ray Fowner on Feb. 15, 1980. She was a stay-at-home mother to her three children and later continued to help raise all her grandchildren. She supported her family in their racing adventures and even raced a season herself, ending as the season champion in the women’s division. She always loved to hang out with family and friends and have a “cold one.” Michele was preceded in death by her father, Barry McCormick and grandmother Ethel Irish. Michele is survived by her husband, Andrew Fowner; her children, Andrew Fowner, Patricia Gallegos, and Jolene Smart, along with their spouses, June Fowner, Fernando Gallegos, and Rex Smart. She is also survived by her brothers, Michael McCormick and Shawn Tedford, her sister Barbara Katko, her mother Patricia Ann Miller and her husband Rob Miller; and grandchildren Tessa Fowner, Branden Fowner, Paige Fowner, Zachary Gallegos, Isabella Gallegos, BrentLee Smart, Candice Smart, Rebecca Smart and Marcus Torres; in addition to an abundance of nieces, nephews and extended family too numerous to list. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in honor of Michele be made to F.G. & S. Racing. Arrangements were entrusted to Affordable Cremation.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
