The Moriarty FFA Chapter took 13 teams to the state Career Development Events (CDE) competition in Las Cruces from April 6-9. The high school and middle school students spent their time studying, learning about New Mexico State University and its campus, and competing.

Kalika Pai, winner of the Entomology contest and placing second in Farm Business Management, wearing her medals proudly.

The contests differ but all teach skills that can be applied to their corresponding field, ranging from Horticulture to Meats.

In order to attend, each team, comprised of three to four people, had to achieve a certain score in their contest at multiple invitationals, which the chapter has been attending for the past six weeks.

The Moriarty Chapter had four teams make the coveted “Top 5” ranks. These teams were recognized onstage and given plaques. The Livestock team, with members Bella Neish, Malorie McAlister, Abby Spindle, and Laura Winn, placed fifth. The Farm Business Management team, with members, Joshua Knight, Morgan McCall, and Kalika Pai, placed fourth. The Entomology team, with members Sam Knight, Morgan McCall, Zack Ortiz, and Kalika Pai, placed fourth. And, the Horse team, with members, Elyssa Jessen, Trey Mitchell, Mariah Montoya, and Bella Neish, placed third.

Also coming from Moriarty FFA was senior and chapter president Kalika Pai who placed second in Farm Business Management and first in Entomology as an individual. Pai was awarded medals and a $500 scholarship to NMSU for her winnings.
