Last year, the Robertson High School Lady Cardinals ended Moriarty’s soccer season in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Last Saturday was payback time as Chloe Rector scored twice and Ashley Strader chipped in a goal to lift the Lady Pintos to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Cardinals. “I was happy that we beat them, I was like, ‘We have to beat ‘em, we have to!’” Rector said.

Robertson opened the scoring with a goal in the 5th minute, but after that the Lady Pintos penetrated effectively.

Strader got Moriarty on the board in the 10th minute when she dribbled the ball unassisted into the 18-yard box and drilled it through Robertson’s goal keeper. “It went right through her legs,” Strader said of her equalizer that tied the score at 1-1.

In the 26th minute, Caia Kamplain passed the ball to Rector who knocked it into the corner of the goal from just beyond the 6-yard box to give the Lady Pintos a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Rector scored again in the 73rd minute when she muscled the ball past a Robertson defender and the Lady Cardinals goalkeeper—who had come out for the stop. At first, it looked as though Rector was sending a would-be cross pass to Strader. But the ball had enough zing on it to curl its way into the goal as Strader shadowed it.

“There was a chick right with me and I saw their goalie come out and I was just trying to get it through that space so Ashley could tap it in and it just rolled in,” Rector said.

“I was just making sure it went in, so yeah, I guess I guided it in,” Strader said, smiling.

“I feel good about it,” head coach Val Luker said of Moriarty’s fourth-consecutive victory. “There were some kinks in the very beginning but we got more organized and got it done—that’s what we wanted, to win the grudge match.”
