A handful of high school riders, ropers, and shooters from the area competed at the National High School Finals Rodeo, July 18-24 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This year’s rodeo consisted of 1,700 competitors from 42 states, as well as Canada, Mexico and Australia in 17 different rodeo events, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star.

According to the National High School Rodeo Association website, nhsra.com, Dalli Cain of Mountainair placed fourth in the short go competition of the light rifle championships.

Other area contestants who had notable performances included McKinzee Shiver of Stanley, who tied for seventh place during one of the girls cutting competitions on July 23; Sterlin Mitchell of Lamy, who tied for second place on both July 19 and July 23, and finished 16th on July 24 in the boys cutting competitions and also had a couple of good performances in the reined cow horse competitions; Evann Segura of Stanley, who placed ninth during one of the breakaway roping performances on July 21; and Katelyn Detweiler of Edgewood, who placed 12 during the pole bending performance on July 21.
