Oliver Anaya, 79, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 14 in Albuquerque. He was born on June 26, 1936 in Tajique, to Juan and Marcofla Anaya. Oliver was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Diego Sanchez; sisters, Irene Vigil, Leandrita Lance, Mary Hidilgo; brothers-in-law, Pete Vigil, Neal Lance, Louie Hidilgo; sister-in-law Amy Anaya; nieces, Gladys Lance, Angel Sanchez and Annabell Lesperance. He is survived by his daughter Mary Ellen Anaya; granddaughter Nicole Alderete; two great-grandsons from Albuquerque; brothers, Bert Anaya and wife Peggy, and Herman Anaya; sister-in-law Eslinda Sanchez; sisters Rosie Urban and husband Manuel Urban from Tajique, Delora Barela and husband Victor Barela from Albuquerque and several nephews and nieces. Oliver was a kind, caring and giving person. He will be greatly missed by his family. A memorial service was held. Aug. 26 in Albuquerque.
Leota started working for The Independent in 2006, working her way up through the ranks. An employee buyout in 2010 led to her ownership of the newspaper. Leota has served on the board of the N.M.
