After recent blowouts, Moriarty girls hoopsters perfect at 17-0

With its two recent blowouts over Bernalillo and Del Norte, Moriarty High’s girls basketball team remains undefeated at 17-0.

The Lady Pintos easily won at Bernalillo 61-25 last Saturday, two days after pounding the Del Norte Lady Knights at home, 45-11.

Before the win over Del Norte, Moriarty head coach Joe Bailey said the Lady Knights—a former district foe—know the Lady Pintos “better than anyone,” meaning the game could’ve been tough for the home team.

It wasn’t.

The Pintos dominated from the outset, starting the game with a 19-0 eruption before building a commanding 28-4 lead at the intermission.

Most of Moriarty’s offensive outpouring was produced by Alyssa Adams—who sank a pair of first-half 3-pointers—and several fast-break layups by Emerald Russell.

The Lady Knights had no answers for stopping Russell, who owned the paint with 10 points in the first half before finishing with a game-high 18. Adams added 13.

Del Norte didn’t sink a field goal until midway through the fourth quarter.

“This was a good win,” Bailey said. “We played great defense. We played a whole lot better than we did Tuesday [against Bosque on Jan. 9], and Del Norte’s a lot better than Bosque is, we didn’t have the focus and intensity against Bosque that we did tonight, so that was nice. But there’s bigger fish down the road.”

Bailey was referring to district opponents Portales—who the Lady Pintos travel to face on Friday—and Hope Christian who Moriarty will host Jan. 23.
