Sandia Mountain Lions Club would like to thank the general public and The Independent for assisting us in collecting used eyeglasses through the years. Because of your generosity, in our last fiscal year, we sent 2,024 pairs of glasses, 192 lenses and five hearing aids to our Lions clearinghouse in Texas.
From there the items were cleaned, measured for prescriptions, catalogued and sent to third world countries for free distribution. As an added bonus, all these items were kept out of our landfills.
As club Eyeglass Collection Chair for the past eight years, I want to express my appreciation to our generous community.
Our new chair is Ken Steinnerd of Tijeras. He encourages the continual recycling of eyeglasses and hearing aids by placing them in Lions collection boxes found in many stores and offices throughout the East Mountains. For more information, call 505-281-5698.

Editor’s note: The Independent will continue to be a collection spot in Edgewood for eyeglasses donated to the Lions. Drop them off during office hours. Because we are in and out so much, especially late in the week, we suggest you call 505-286-1212 to make sure someone is here when you stop by.
