Sonia “Sunny” (Kern) Ganley passed away Oct. 10. She was 65 years old. Sunny was born Sept. 17, 1951, in New York City to Milton Kern and Phyllis (Madzel) Kern. She and her husband Bob married in San Jose, Calif., on March 3, 1978. They relocated to New Mexico in 1986 and resided in Santa Fe for over 20 years, where she served La Cienega Volunteer Fire Department for 12 years and received the rank of Asst. Fire Chief and EMT. Most recently, Sunny lived in McIntosh for several years. Sunny belonged to ABATE of NM. She was an animal lover who rescued and adopted many animals throughout her life and she enjoyed volunteering for local animal rescue groups. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Robert J. Ganley; father, Milton Kern and mother Phyllis (Madzel) Kern; and sisters Marilyn, Andrea, and Arlene. She is survived by son Robert and wife Ashley of Albuquerque and grandson Zachary Robert who is on the way; son John and wife Amanda, also of Albuquerque; daughter, Tracy Grycel and her husband Ted of Moriarty; sister, Teri Brock of Estancia; grandchildren, Annette Topham and her husband Mark, Blair Strand-Grycel and Mary Strand-Grycel, Nick Grycel, Sarah Grycel, Angie Moreno; great-grandchildren, Ruby, Perry, Mollie, Brody, Gracie, Lillie, James, Joshua, Luke, David, Abby, Joyce, Diamond, Douglas, Roxanne, Jesse, Joseph, and Mairi. There will be a Memorial Service at the New Beginning Community Church at 200 Eunice in Moriarty, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. The family is asking that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood and the Santa Fe Raptor Center in her memory.
