Manzano High’s top-ranked football team beat No. 4 Las Cruces 28-10 in last Friday’s Class 6A semifinals in Las Cruces. The Monarchs (12-0) overcame a 10-6 first-half deficit with a touchdown just before half time and two more TDs in the second half. Manzano advances to the state championship for the first time since 2010 and will face No. 2 La Cueva Dec. 2 at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque.

Mountainair High’s football season ended last Saturday in a 76-24 loss at home to No. 1 Melrose in the 8-Man state championship.

Amador Brazil’s touchdown run capped Mountainair’s opening drive, and later in the first quarter Brazil tossed a TD pass to Andrew Lopez to give and the second-seeded Mustangs a 16-6 lead.

But after that it was all Melrose as the Buffaloes scored 56 unanswered points. The Mustangs finished the season 9-2.
