For the first time in 15 years Manzano beat the Mayfield Trojans in a 27-20 come-from-behind battle last Friday at Wilson Stadium. East Mountain resident Marcus Gutierrez scored the game’s first touchdown. Orlando Perez ran for a TD and threw the game-winning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. Head coach Chad Adcox said it was only the second time in school history that the Monarchs have beaten the Trojans.

Six Pintos scored in last Saturday’s 7-2 soccer victory over the visiting Artesia Bulldogs. The Pintos played Tuesday at district rival St. Pius X after The Independent went to print.

Mountainair volleyball picked up a 3-0 sweep over Tierra Encantada last Saturday.

Mountainair football lost 30-8 last Friday at Logan.
