Moriarty High’s softball season ended May 10 in a 12-0 loss to the Cobre Lady Indians in the opening round of the Class 4A state softball tournament at Cleveland High’s softball complex in Rio Rancho.

The No. 12 Lady Pintos held the No. 5 Lady Indians to a single run through the first two innings. But a handful of defensive errors led to 4 Cobre runs in the third and 5 more in the fourth.

“They’re a good team, they can hit the ball,” Moriarty pitcher Kodie Aceves said. “Any pitch I threw over the plate, they hit.”

Cobre tacked on 2 more runs in the fifth before the game was called on the mercy rule.

“They were pretty tough, tougher than what we were expecting,” Moriarty head coach Tonya Walden said. “But we had a lot of minor errors. It just wasn’t our day.”

Moriarty’s offense never got on track against Cobre’s pitcher Jadin Placencio, who struck out 10 Lady Pintos.

Arely Lerma’s single in the third inning was Moriarty’s only hit of the game.

“She did amazing today,” Walden said about Lerma.

Moriarty finished the season with a 13-14 record.
