Early voting is underway through Election Day in a special election race for the Congressional District 1 seat vacated when Deb Haaland was appointed as Secretary of the Interior.

The district includes parts of Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Torrance counties.

On the ballot are Aubrey Dunn of Mountainair, running as an independent candidate, along with Republican Mark Moores of Albuquerque, Democrat Melanie Stansbury of Albuquerque, Libertarian Christopher Manning of Kirtland, and two write-in candidates without party affiliation, Laura Olivas of Albuquerque and Robert Ornelas Anaheim, California.

Voters can cast a ballot in person (early voting), or by absentee ballot. The deadline to return absentee ballot applications to the county clerks is May 18.

New Mexico has same-day voter registration, which essentially means the vote is treated like a provisional ballot and verified before being tallied.

The recommended last day for voters to mail absentee ballots back to the county clerks is May 25. Absentee ballots must be received by the time polls close June 1 at 7 p.m., and may be returned in person as well as through the mail.

Election Day is June 1, with polling locations open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Complete the absentee application online on the New Mexico Voter Information Portal at nmvote.org. A valid New Mexico driver’s license or state ID is required to use this option.

Bernalillo County

Download the absentee ballot application on bernco.gov. Print, complete, mail, or hand deliver to the county clerk’s office. To request an application by email, send a request to clerk@bernco.gov and an application will be mailed. To request an application by phone call 505-243-VOTE (8683).

From May 15 to May 29 in Bernalillo County, early voting ans same-day registration expand to Monday through Saturday, with all polling locations open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Santa Fe County

The Santa Fe County Clerk will be offering in-person same-day voter registration at the Town of Edgewood Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Election Day.

Early voting starts at Edgewood Town Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., through May 29.

The Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office is at 100 Catron St. in Santa Fe. Due to Covid restrictions, it is open by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

No walk-in services are allowed until further notice, as all visitors to the County building must be pre-screened. Properly worn face masks are required to enter all county buildings. Torrance County

Torrance County registered voters may cast their ballots in person at the County Clerk’s early voting site located in the Torrance County Administrative Building at 205 S. Ninth Street in Estancia.

The entrance to the Early Voting Site will be lin the back of the building. Parking will be available. Voters are encouraged to request an absentee ballot and may do by calling 505-544-4350, emailing yotero@tcnm.us, or online at nmvote.org.

Early Voting starts at Torrance County Administrative Building from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, through May 29.

On May 28 from 7:30 to 5:30 p.m. there will be voting and on May 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Early in-person voting will be available at the Moriarty Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On May 15, early in-person voting will begin at the Moriarty Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
